About / Studio
Architecture that listens before it speaks.
MA Design Studio is a compact architecture and interior design practice based in Tokyo, working across private residences, hospitality, cultural interiors, and spatial brand environments.
Story
We design the pause that lets life come forward.
The studio began as a material study: timber beside paper, plaster beside shadow, stone beside silence. That research became a design practice for clients who want spaces with restraint, tactility, and emotional clarity.
形ではなく、関係性を設計する。
We are interested in what happens between things: the pause before a door opens, the temperature of a wall at dusk, the way a table gathers conversation without demanding attention.

Mission / Vision / Values
Calm is a design outcome.
Our work is quiet, but not passive. We use restraint to make decisions sharper and spaces more deeply felt.
Restraint
We edit until each wall, object, and opening has a reason to remain.
Material Honesty
Stone, timber, plaster, paper, and shadow are treated as active parts of the architecture.
Human Ritual
A project succeeds when it makes ordinary movement feel calmer and more deliberate.
Journey
A young studio with a deliberate archive.
Each year has tightened the studio language: fewer gestures, better materials, more attention to the interval between them.
2023
Studio research begins
A small material archive is formed around timber, paper, plaster, and the study of Ma.
2024
First private residences
The studio completes a sequence of calm homes in Nagano, Kyoto, and Tokyo.
2025
Hospitality and cultural work
Tea rooms, gallery interiors, and retreat concepts expand the practice.
2026
Integrated spatial direction
Architecture, interiors, branding, and material consultation become one studio offering.

Identity
Small by choice, senior by default.
Every project is led by a focused core team and supported by trusted collaborators: architects, lighting designers, makers, landscape specialists, and local delivery partners.
Listen
We begin with rituals, constraints, and the feeling the space must hold.
Observe
Light, approach, sound, views, climate, and existing materials become the brief.
Next
Bring us a place, a feeling, and a constraint.
We will help turn the first conversation into a calm, buildable direction.
